A Pair of Chunky Black & White Staffordshire Dogs. The eyes, mouth, nose and chain/collar are decorated in black, yellow and brown underglaze colours. Both include moulded claws/nails & distinctive curls of fur between legs and on rear. The manner of painting of the roughly feathered underglaze black decoration is typical of the wares being produced in Staffordshire circa 1875 (ref. 1 - Kenny suggests circa.1850 in Ref. 2.). This mould can also be found with the earlier best gold decoration (ref 1.).
· Dimensions: 20cm (8”) tall, 15cm (6”) wide and 11cm (4.5”) deep. · Weight: 600g & 750g. Total packaged weight ~2kg. · Overall Condition: Good . · Repair/Restoration/Conservation: None. · Chips/Dents: Old chip 10mm x 25mm in size to rear paw on base of LHS dog that has been filled with a chalky substance . Cracks: None. · Other notes: Unstained crazing to the glaze is present. One prominent craze line to the centre of the base at rear (LHS dog) running from a firing crack for 20mm (<1”) into base & 35 mm (<1 ½”) vertically up the back.
