A Scarce Pair of Pearlware glazed Sitting Staffordshire or Scottish Pottery Comforter Dogs. Although generically referred to as Staffordshire ware these particular Spaniels are more likely to have been made at one of the Portobello potteries in Scotland. Portobello and the surrounding coal rich area was Scotland’s version of Staffordshire with over 50 different pottery concerns operating between the late 18th century and the 20th century. The majority of the marl/clay used was transported from Ireland. The dogs are decorated with a red & black underglaze colour. I have a pair in my collection with best gold decoration which suggests they were manufactured pre 1870. The shape is unusual as is the studded collar that the spaniels wear (from European influence and used for protecting dogs from bears).
· Dimensions: 21cm (8”) tall, 15cm (6”) wide and 11cm (4”) deep. · Weight: 650g & 700g.
