A Large & Impressive Staffordshire Pottery Spaniel Dog with scarce black glaze ‘Jackfield’ decoration. The black-glazed dog is decorated with best (fired) gold decoration to the chain, padlock & collar. The facial features are carefully painted with best gold overglaze decoration. The dog is press moulded from a red clay. The dog is well moulded and the fur detail is good.

 

‘Although Jackfield Spaniels are not common, they do appear on the market. Unusual figures like these, however, are seen infrequently’ passage taken from Adele Kenny’s book (ref.1).

 

Jackfield ware was produced by the application of a black glaze over a red earthenware body. The process was developed early in the 19th century in Jackfield, Shropshire and copied by the Staffordshire potters. The death of Prince Albert in 1861 and Queen Victoria’s use of black in mourning lead to this finish (in all forms, teapots, etc) becoming popular up until the early 20th century.

 

Dimensions: 30cm (12”) tall, 27cm (11”) wide and 12cm (5”) deep.

Weight: The weight is 2000g. Total packaged weight is ~3-4kg.

Cracks: None.

Other notes: A superb example of a scarce Large Jackfield Spaniel with very little wear to the gold decoration.
