Price: £120

A Pair of Staffordshire Spaniel Dogs. The dogs were produced from a three-piece slip-mould, sprayed with an underglaze Orange/Red paint and hand-painted with black underglaze decoration. The lead glaze that shows the slight blue tinge that is characteristic of a cobalt additive, commonly referred to as pearlware. The design included edge supports (three moulded lines around the gas expansion hole) to reduce the likelihood of firing cracks & sagging. The design, method of paint application and also the ‘mass production’ appearance (finger marks, quick free hand decoration) indicate a late Victorian date 1875+ (ref 1). Despite the fact that they were produced in large numbers, few survive the last century or so, as the slip mould method of production produced cheaper but inherently thinner & weaker figures.
